National Agencies and Resources

Most of these websites provide specific information about the organization or agency listed. However, one especially valuable “linking site” with a plethora of age-related links is the FirstGov for Seniors site, marked with an *.

Administration on Aging (AOA)

The mission of the AOA is to “develop a comprehensive, coordinated and cost-effective system of long-term care that helps elderly individuals to maintain their dignity in their homes and communities. Our mission statement also is to help society prepare for an aging population.”

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP)

With over 35 million members, AARP is the leading nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people age 50 and over in the United States. AARP is “dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as we age. We lead positive social change and deliver value to members through information, advocacy and service.”

American Geriatrics Society (AGS)

The AGS is a “nationwide, not-for-profit association of geriatrics health care professionals, research scientists, and other concerned individuals dedicated to improving the health, independence and quality of life of all older people. The organization provides leadership to health care professionals, policy makers and the public by developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.”

American Society on Aging (ASA)

ASA is an association of “diverse individuals bound by a common goal: to support the commitment and enhance the knowledge and skills of those who seek to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. The membership of ASA is a multidisciplinary array of professionals who are concerned with the physical, emotional, social, economic and spiritual aspects of aging.”

Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE)

AGHE is the only national membership organization devoted primarily to gerontological education. Therefore, it is “in a unique position to develop and sponsor education and training initiatives and to involve students, educators, researchers, and officials from across the country in providing resources for older adults and for those who serve them.”

Gerontological Society of America (GSA)

GSA is a non-profit professional organization with more than 5000 members in the field of aging. GSA “provides researchers, educators, practitioners, and policy makers with opportunities to understand, advance, integrate, and use basic and applied research on aging to improve the quality of life as one ages.”

International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG)

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

As the aging-related institute within the National Institutes of Health, NIA’s mission is to “improve the health and well-being of older Americans through research, and specifically, to: support and conduct high-quality research on aging processes, age-related diseases, and special problems and needs of the aged, train and develop highly skilled research scientists from all population groups, develop and maintain state-of-the-art resources to accelerate research progress, and disseminate information and communicate with the public and interested groups on health and research advances and on new directions for research.”
